What’s the most effective way to get a VERY picky toddler to try a new food? — Amy

Haylie Pomroy: There are three little tricks that I like to have my clients use:

1. I have a lot of my clients try new fruits and veggies in a frozen form. 

I know this sounds kind of funny, but organic fruits and veggies don’t have as much instant impact on the taste buds. Things like organic peas or blueberries can make their way down to the belly before their flavor comes through in the mouth. Frozen string beans, carrots, strawberries can be interesting to a toddler. I would get my little ones to eat frozen sweet potato spears long before I could ever get them to stomach sweet potato baby food in a jar. A little trick, but it can work very well.

2. Do a one week sugar sweep. 
Although we try to eat really great foods at home, there are times when our busy hectic schedules allow for more processed and packaged foods to sneak in. In my household, we regularly do one week sugar sweeps. This is where we only eat real foods for one week.  Things like fruits and veggies, organic meats and dairy, whole and sprouted grains, etc. My kids are old enough to look at packaging of things like peanut butter and apple sauce and see what brands do not have any sugar added. This seems to cleanse the palate and open the kids up to more variety and healthier foods. It is a great one for Mom as well. Really watch those baby foods. Many of our toddlers become picky eaters because they are being fed a ton of added refined sugar per day in some of their foods. This can make for a very picky palate.

3. Consider a children’s-based probiotic
These are the good gut bugs that are taken in supplement form. These can enhance digestion, can reduce inflammation in the gut, and encourage the appetite for healthy foods. This trick has brought many clients with picky toddlers huge success.

I do have a motto in my house: I tell my kids that I am perfectly okay with them not liking something. They have to try as many bites as they are old before they can decide that, though.

One note — very picky eaters might be suffering from food allergies. If you suspect this is the case, see your doctor.

You can make grocery shopping easier, more fun — and teach your kids about nutrition while you’re at it!

Haylie Pomroy: I don’t have many friends that like to grocery shop — though I do have one that makes her lists and delegates each kid to find or hunt down items to return to the cart. When I heard about this idea, I decided to take it and turn our grocery adventures into a hunt for healthy foods.

On the drive to the store, I will ask my kids questions like: Did you know the higher up the ingredient list an item is, the more of it there is in a product? So for example, if you are comparing two loaves of bread and both contain the word “sugar” in the ingredient list, the one that has “sugar” lower down the list would be the better choice.

Or I will do things like ask: Who wants to pick what veggie we are having for dinner or what fruit we are having for dessert?

Now my oldest is 11, and I actually give him a mini grocery list and have him venture out into the store to find items to return to our basket. My little one stays in the same aisle for her safety and the sanity of others. Both, however, since a very young age have been on the “hunt” for very healthy foods.

Four healthy things to have an older child hunt for:

1) Ask them to find a loaf of bread that does NOT have the word “enriched flour” in the ingredient list.
2) Ask them to get 1 dozen eggs that are not cracked and are grade A, large brown, and organic.
3) Ask them to find an apple sauce that does NOT have the word “sugar” in the ingredient list.
4) Ask them to find a peanut butter that only has peanuts, oil, and salt in the ingredient list.

Five healthy things to have a younger child hunt for:

1) Ask them to find their most favorite fruit in the whole world.
2) Ask them to now find that favorite fruit that is ripe and ready to eat today.
3) Ask them to now find that favorite fruit that is not quite ripe so they can eat it in a few days.
4) Ask them to find their most favorite vegetable in the whole world.
5) Ask them to find a vegetable that their most favorite animal in the whole world might like to eat. Ask them if they might like to pretend to be that animal and eat it too.

I know that grocery shopping can be a chore, and with kids in tow, it can even be very stressful. Getting kids fired up about eating healthy foods and making good food choices is a gift that you can give them that will carry through their whole lives. In my family, we don’t shop, we “hunt” down healthy food!

Haylie Pomroy: Our kids are bombarded with junk food options every day. They see it in commercials, at some schools, maybe even in their lunches. I get a lot of referrals in my practice for childhood obesity, diabetes, or just picky eaters. With my own kids as well as with my clients’ kids, I like to try to empower them with knowledge about foods that are healthy to choose.

Even when my kids were teeny tiny, I would talk to them about the impact food has on the body. I would say, “Gosh, they can run so fast or jump so high because they have eaten something healthy.” Kids of all ages can begin to see the relationship between healthy choices and healthy bodies. My niece and nephew, pretty grown-up kids, were over the other day, getting ready to jump on the trampoline, and my nephew said to me, “Aunt Haylie, what foods can I eat to jump higher?” Here are a few great and healthy things to teach kids to look for in their food choices.

Proteins
Proteins form the building blocks that build the house we call our bodies. I talk a lot to kids about strong muscles, bones, hair, and teeth. When mine were little, sometimes we would take bites of healthy proteins at the dinner table and then I would have them see if it would make them jump higher or run faster or challenge them to arm wrestling. To this day, my son is very aware of how his protein intake plays a roll in his sports performance. Great foods that have tons of protein are organic chicken, turkey, dairy products, nuts and seeds, beans and legumes. I have a great list of protein-rich foods on my website, hayliepomroy.com.

Healthy Fats
With the fats, I always talk about brain power and good moods. The healthy fats are so important while kids are laying down so many new tracks neurologically in those ever-growing brains. We talk about smart lunches and study snacks in our house.

Pistachios, almonds, cashews, walnuts, pecans, sunflower seeds, avocados, and nut butters are some great healthy fat-based snacks. I had a diabetic client of mine e-mail me the other day. I began seeing him when he was eight, and he is now away at college. He was all fired up because he was taking a science class and he told his professor that he had already learned about how fats work on the brain way back when he was eight (insert proud tear here).

Natural Sugars
I like to talk to my kids about times when sugar can actually be good for you: when you get it in the form of “natural” sugars. For my kiddos, this is kind of a fun one because in many schools, teachers and staff are beginning to talk to kids about sugar being bad for them — our schools don’t even allow cupcakes or cookies at birthday parties anymore. My kids feel awfully smart when they say, “Well, my mom is bringing a ton of sugar to my party: fruit.” Whole fruits contain lots and lots of this wonderful natural sugar! Whole fruits provide vital nutrients to keep up with kids’ rapid rates of growth and development. I don’t advocate a lot of fruit juices for kids, though, because in this form, the sugars become too concentrated. If you must do juice, I suggest you half it with water.

The other day, my daughter crawled up into my lap and said, “Mama, I want to stay little forever — can I have some caffeine?” I just cracked up, it was so cute. I am sure somewhere along the way I had told her that drinking coffee would stunt her growth, and obviously she was listening!

It’s easier than you think! Momlogic’s nutritional counselor shares four tips to enhance the tone of your butt.

Haylie Pomroy: I was recently at a lunch meeting with a group of very amazing women. We were talking about food and how it can be used to shape different parts of the body. One of my favorite questions was asked of me: “Is there anything that can be eaten that will enhance the tone of my butt?”

The answer is yes!

Many of you already know the basics:

If you find rough terrain back there, eliminate caffeine and increase your water intake. My rule of thumb is Ã?½ your body weight in ounces of water per day. So if you weigh 160 lbs., you must get a minimum of 80 ounces of water per day. You can also check out my website for hydrating/fat-burning tea recipes! You also want to eliminate artificial sweeteners such as Sweet ‘N Low, Equal, and Splenda, as these are fast friends to a lumpy, bumpy butt.

These easy tips make a huge impact for my clientele:

1. Eat fruit immediately before exercise.

Believe it or not, your butt has the largest muscle in the whole body: the gluteus maximus. Fruit provides this large muscle with the fuel to quickly contract and relax and maximize your workout efforts. Citrus is my most favorite, because it is very high in a nutrient called bioflavonoid as well as vitamin C. One orange or grapefruit within half an hour of your workout will make that big muscle snap to. Yes, you need protein to build muscle, but you also need fruit to make it stand at attention.

This large muscle group is also lined with a sometimes very thick layer of fat. The fat on your butt has very poor blood flow. Tips # 2-4 deal with that fun fact.

2. Scrub your butt often, or pay someone else to do it.
Dry skin brushing, loofah, or salt scrubs bring blood flow to the fatty areas of the butt. Take time during every shower to scrub this area pink. I use a poor man’s/woman’s salt scrub consisting of 50% course ground sea salt and 50% aluminum-free baking soda.

3. Turn your workout pants into hot pants.
Apply a gel or cream to your trouble area that has capsicum in it just prior to workouts. This helps promote blood flow in the fine capillaries going to the fatty part of your butt. Some clients like to wear plastic or neoprene pants, or wrap in plastic wrap just before their run, lunges, or squats. Be prepared for a little fire in your panties with this one, because capsicum is a chili pepper extract. Hot stuff!

4. Consider taking either cinnamon or ginkgo biloba prior to a workout. Check with your doctor first though because these supplements are both blood movers and can be contraindicated in conditions such as high blood pressure.

One trend that has been around for some time in Hollywood is coming back into fashion: IV ozone therapy.

Haylie Pomroy: Practicing in the areas that I have, for as long as I have, and with the client base that I have, I’ve been exposed to just about every alternative and complimentary medicine treatment there is.

One trend that has been around for some time in Hollywood is coming back into fashion: IV ozone therapy. This is where a catheter is placed into a vein, blood is pulled from the vein into a glass bottle, and the blood is then pumped full of ozone that comes from an ozone generator that is hooked up to oxygen tanks; after a few minutes of the blood’s exposure to ozone, it is given back to the patient. The theory with this treatment is that it provides an extremely available source of oxygen to the body. When news broke of Michael Jackson’s home being filled with oxygen tanks, I felt compelled to write about one of Hollywood’s not-so-dirty little secrets.

In inner circles, it has been well known that Michael Jackson utilized therapies such as IV ozone and hyperbaric chambers to help him deal with his lupus, immune issues, and burn care. For years, IV ozone has been used with mass-based cancers or viral infections such as HIV or hepatitis. It has been well embraced for burn or wound care, and I think that is where it first trickled into the sights of the Hollywood elite. Many plastic surgeons began incorporating oxygen/ozone therapies to promote healing after plastic surgery. Although the procedure has been deemed controversial here in the States by the FDA, it is quite popular in other countries. Over 7,000 doctors in Germany use ozone in their practices every day. I have had many clients using ozone therapies for a variety of reasons, but the huge surge in use that I have witnessed is in the anti-aging and performance-enhancing athletic communities. I have seen individuals getting one to two IV ozone treatments per week.

Ozone therapies can also be used rectally, vaginally, and can even be used as bagging treatments, where an area is covered in plastic and ozone is pumped into the area.

If taking the leap to IV ozone therapies doesn’t feel right for you, here are a few “at home” ideas that can enhance the oxygen in your body:

Purify your air: I like Ecoquest, Living Air

Purify your water: I like Multi-Pure or Living Water
Purify your body: I like the Optimal Cleanse

Use food-grade 35% peroxide to bathe in. Pour 8 ounces or �½ a cup into a tub of warm water and soak for 30 minutes. I am sure that all of you can benefit from this!

Will giving kids weight screenings at school help stop childhood obesity?

Starting this year, Massachusetts schools will be sending home report cards that are a matter of life or death. According to the Boston Globe, comprehensive BMI (Body Mass measurements) will be issued to parents of students that will gauge whether their child is at a safe weight. The state hopes the scorecards will assist parents in combating childhood obesity.

But the dissemination of this information isn’t getting high marks from health professionals.

“Focusing on body image is the wrong way to go,” says Haylie J. Pomroy, nutritional counselor. “The focus should not be on body image but  lifestyle choices.”

Although Pomroy is wary of the repercussions of sending these kind evaluations to parents, she does understand the thinking behind it. “Childhood obesity is a crisis, and any time there’s a program to raise awareness it’s a good thing.” Ultimately, Pomroy thinks the BMI testing is unnecessary. “Most parents know if their child is struggling with weight issues,” she says.

If parents really want to keep their kids at a healthy weight, says Pomroy, mother of two, they need to instill in kids the empowerment of healthy food choices and not focus on fat or thin.
Pomroy says she practices what she preaches too. “I tell our kids about foods that make them run faster and build their immune system and which foods are ‘brain foods.’ Like if they have a test coming up, I tell them to eat carrots to get ready.”

Momlogic’s nutritional counselor gives you the skinny.

Haylie Pomroy: In my 15 years of practice as a nutritional counselor, I have seen diet trends come in and out of favor. There are a few that are actually pretty sound in their approach. Then there are some that are wacky in their philosophy as well as their outcome. Some get the weight off fast, only to leave it and double the pounds lurking as soon as you eat again. And then there are some that are downright dangerous.

Let’s see if we can merge urban myth with clinical experience and explore some “crazy” diets that can actually work.

HCG Diet
It is a clean, healthy food-based diet coupled with a trace of the pregnancy hormone HCG. It is extremely low in calories, but the theory is the HCG stimulates rapid fat metabolism, providing the fuel for the body. I have seen clients lose 25 pounds in a month, reverse diabetes, lower cholesterol, and avoid gastric bypass surgeries with this one. Some extreme dieters follow this diet and try to save their money by not purchasing the HCG — a monthly supply runs $500-$1,700. This is where this diet can go very wrong. On the diet without the HCG, I have seen many young women come in with elevated cholesterol and in a very poor state of health.

Optimal Cleanse
This has been billed as the “Lose 10 pounds in 10 days” diet on national television and is endorsed by many A-list celebrities. The craziest thing about this diet is how much it changes people’s lives. It is like boot camp for those that want to become a health nut and make lifelong weight changes. There are shakes involved, but grocery lists, recipes, and meal plans make this program easy to integrate into a new lifestyle. Clinically I have seen this diet significantly reduce cholesterol, lower blood sugar, and go after the fat in those hard-to-get-to places.

The Cabbage Soup Diet
I actually kind of like this diet and I have seen many individuals have pretty good success. Basically you make a cabbage soup, eat as much of it as you can every day, and each new day you add specific foods and only those foods. For example, you have a day with bananas and skimmed milk, and the soup of course. This diet seems to fade in and out of popularity over the years; I have even seen it handed out in cardiovascular clinics across the country. Clients get some weight off and then can migrate to a healthy, well-balanced diet and keep it off.

Master Cleanse
A crazy diet article would not be complete without mention of the master cleanse. Many people also refer to it as the maple syrup or lemon juice diet. It is not at all food-based. You drink approximately 160 ounces daily of lemon juice, maple syrup, cayenne pepper, salt water, and herbal stool softening teas. This is not typically a diet I endorse, but there is a time and place for most things. A male client had a torn meniscus in his knee and was in significant pain. His insurance company would not approve his knee surgery until he lost 20 lbs. Pain, medical necessity of the surgery, and very limited financial resources motivated us to dust this “crazy” diet off and successfully take it for a spin.

Although this diet has been around for over 50 years, Beyonce brought it into fashion again when she used it to lose a quick 20 lbs while preparing for her roll in the movie “Dream Girls.”

I really try to keep up on fad or “crazy” new diets. Many are merely recycled ideas with a new name and new promises of glory. There is the Chocolate Diet, Apple Cider Vinegar Diet, Russian Air Force Diet (I see this one making a comeback soon), and, believe it or not, there is even a diet where you drink your first morning urine, yuck!

Many of my clients walk through the door having tried one or many crazy diets. I have to tell you that I am truly a purist at heart and I advocate high-quality, nutrient-dense foods that enhance the metabolism and nourish the body. I will also tell you that under the right clinical setting, I have used many crazy diet concepts to jiggle loose a few pounds fast for clients in need!

Haylie Pomroy: My son and I had the unique opportunity to attend an amazing premiere of the movie “Food Inc.” Thursday night in Hollywood. In attendance were the movie stars Michael Pollan, who wrote “The Omnivore’s Dilemma,” and Eric Schlosser, author of “Fast Food Nation,” along with many other inspirational Americans. Shot in a documentary format, the film sheds light on the way the American food system works and its impact on Americans’ health.

First, we attended a relatively intimate, celebrity-filled pre-party where my son and I had the opportunity to visit with the creators, producers, and directors of the film. There was such a profound energy of passion given off by these people whose blood, sweat, and tears went into making this film. Then it was off to the theater to watch the movie.

Another genius documentary by Participant Media (which also made “An Inconvenient Truth” and, more recently, “The Soloist”), “Food Inc.” was not only incredibly informative but downright inspirational. The movie is a must-see for anyone who eats! I have to say, though, the highlight of the evening was when my son and I were asked if we could be photographed signing the petition poster to bring healthy foods into America’s schools.

As we were signing, my son leaned over to me and said, “Mom, I feel like I could change the world.” Our children truly are our future.
